Paraffin wax (or petroleum wax) is a soft colorless solid derived from petroleum, coal or shale oil that consists of a mixture of hydrocarbon molecules containing between twenty and forty carbon atoms. It is solid at room temperature and begins to melt above approximately 37 °C (99 °F), and its boiling point is above 370 °C (698 °F). Common applications for paraffin wax include lubrication, electrical insulation, and candles; dyed paraffin wax can be made into crayons. It is distinct from kerosene and other petroleum products that are sometimes called paraffin.Un-dyed, unscented paraffin candles are odorless and bluish-white. Paraffin wax was first created by Carl  Reichenbach in Germany in 1830 and marked a major advancement in candle making technology, as it burned more cleanly and reliably than tallow candles and was cheaper to produce.

Bottles: to seal, dip the top of the bottle in melted wax.
Irons: to keep them smooth, rub hot iron over a bar of wax wrapped in cloth.

Pyridine is a basic heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C5H5N. It is structurally related to benzene, with one methine group (=CH−) replaced by a nitrogen atom. It is a highly flammable, weakly alkaline, water-miscible liquid with a distinctive, unpleasant fish-like smell. Pyridine is colorless, but older or impure samples can appear yellow. The pyridine ring occurs in many important compounds, including agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and vitamins. Historically, pyridine was produced from coal tar. Today it is synthesized on the scale of about 20,000 tonnes per year worldwide.

Pesticides:
The main use of pyridine is as a precursor to the herbicides paraquat and diquat. The first synthesis step of insecticide chlorpyrifos consists of the chlorination of pyridine. Pyridine is also the starting compound for the preparation of pyrithione-based fungicides. Cetylpyridinium and lauryl pyridinium, which can be produced from pyridine with a Zincke reaction, are used as antiseptic in oral and dental care products. Pyridine is easily attacked by alkylating agents to give N-alkylpyridinium salts. One example is cetylpyridinium chloride.
Synthesis of paraquat:
Solvent: Pyridine is used as a polar, basic, low-reactive solvent, for example in Knoevenagel condensations. It is especially suitable for the dehalogenation, where it acts as the base of the elimination reaction and bonds the resulting hydrogen halide to form a pyridinium salt. In esterifications and acylations, pyridine activates the carboxylic acid halides or anhydrides. Even more active in these reactions are the pyridine derivatives 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) and 4-(1-pyrrolidinyl) pyridine. Pyridine is also used as a base in condensation reactions.

Silicon tetrachloride or tetrachlorosilane is the inorganic compound with the formula SiCl4. It is a colourless volatile liquid that fumes in air. It is used to produce high purity silicon and silica for commercial applications.
Silicon tetrachloride is prepared by the chlorination of various silicon compounds such as ferrosilicon, silicon carbide, or mixtures of silicon dioxide and carbon. The ferrosilicon route is most common.
In the laboratory, SiCl4 can be prepared by treating silicon with chlorine:
Si + 2 Cl2 → SiCl4
It was first prepared by Jöns Jakob Berzelius in 1823.
Brine can be contaminated with silica when the production of chlorine is a byproduct of a metal refining process from metal chloride ore. In rare occurrences, the silicon dioxide in silica is converted to silicon tetrachloride when the contaminated brine is electrolyzed.

Product Application:
Silicon tetrachloride is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of polysilicon, a hyper pure form of silicon, since it has a boiling point convenient for purification by repeated fractional distillation. It is reduced to trichlorosilane (HSiCl3) by hydrogen gas in a hydrogenation reactor, and either directly used in the Siemens process or further reduced to silane (SiH4) and injected into a fluidized bed reactor. Silicon tetrachloride reappears in both these two processes as a by-product and is recycled in the hydrogenation reactor. Vapor phase epitaxy of reducing silicon tetrachloride with hydrogen at approximately 1250oC was done:
SiCl4(g) + 2 H2(g) → Si(s) + 4 HCl(g) at 1250oC
The produced polysilicon is used as wafers in large amounts by the photovoltaic industry for conventional solar cells made of crystalline silicon and also by the semiconductor industry.
Silicon tetrachloride can also be hydrolysed to fumed silica. High purity silicon tetrachloride is used in the manufacture of optical fibres. This grade should be free of hydrogen containing impurities like trichlorosilane. Optical fibres are made using processes like MCVD and OFD where silicon tetrachloride is oxidized to pure silica in the presence of oxygen.

Pollution from the production of silicon tetrachloride has been reported in China associated with the increased demand for photovoltaic cells that has been stimulated by subsidy programs. Methoxy Propanol (PM) is a colourless highly flammable liquid that is soluble in water. It is a methoxy alcohol derivative with the formula of C4H10O2. It is an organic solvent with a variety of industrial and commercial uses. Methoxy Propanol is mainly used in the production of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (also known as PMA). Similar to other glycol ethers, it is used as a carrier solvent in printing inks. Furthermore it is used as industrial and commercial paint stripper, paints, varnishes and inks.

Product Application:
Methoxy propanol is predominately used in the manufacture of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (otherwise known as PMA) and is also used in industrial and commercial products including paints, varnishes, inks, synthetic resin and rubber adhesives, and automotive and oven cleaners.  It is also used as a cleaning agent in the LCD and electronics industry.

Methoxy propyl acetate, also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, is a clear, colourless liquid with a mild ether-like odour. It is only slightly soluble in water but miscible with most common organic solvents. Methoxy propyl acetate is slightly hygroscopic, relatively fast evaporating and has a low viscosity. It enters into reactions which are characteristic of both esters and ethers, displaying their good solvent power.
Methoxy propyl acetate is produced by reacting propylene oxide with methanol using a catalyst.

Product Application:
Selected applications of Methoxypropyl Acetate are presented below. By virtue of its good solvent power for numerous resins and dyes, Methoxypropyl Acetate can be used as a solvent, flow improver and coalescent in coatings. It is particularly suitable for coatings containing polyisocyanates. In this case, it is important that the peroxide fraction is as small as possible, as otherwise the colour of the final product may change. It is for this reason that we stabilize our solvent with 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol(BHT). Other applications for Methoxypropyl Acetate include

  • flexographic, gravure and screen printing inks
  • adhesives
  • ball pen pastes
  • dyes in furniture polishes or woodstains
  • dye solutions and pastes for printing and colouring leather and textiles. Yet another application for Methoxypropyl Acetate is as a binder forcore sands in foundries.
