Bitumen is an oil product and it cannot be mixed with water. That is why we add an emulsifier (a surface active agent) with water before adding bitumen. Addition of an emulsifier with water facilitates breaking of bitumen into minute particles and keeps it dispersed in suspension. Bitumen emulsions provide a range of benefits over heated and cutback forms. Emulsifying bitumen allows you to reduce the viscosity without the need to continuously heat the product. Bitumen emulsions are particularly useful when it is difficult to use bulky machinery in remote or hard to reach areas, such as rural locations or confined spaces.

Prevents coalescence or flocculation.
Ionic charges create repulsive forces between the emulsified bitumen preventing coalescence and flocculation.
The ionic charge provides efficient solubility in water.
